Cutting the gains

Rob
Wonder if anybody has any top tips for gain cutting.
I marked the start of the gain 300mm from the end of the strake but it took ages to rebate it and still needs a hefty twist to marry it up with the garboard. Haven't read about the use of steaming etc once the garboards are in place. Of course the bevelled edge gets perilously thin with the steep angle plus dropping the "next" plank into the "previous" one.
Maybe the process gets easier with practice.

Hi Rob
Did you find a solution for this?  (It surprises me thast no-one answered)
I guess you've somehow got on the the build - How's it going.
If you still need advice, let us know and I'll jog some of the more experienced builders.

Hi Rob

Hope the build is going well, I expect you have moved on from this stage now but this was my technique, like you say quite a twist, but it does go, hot, damp towels may soften the ply a bit but I didn't find it necessary, definitely gets easier with the other strakes.

Planing plywood is always going to be a bit awkward, especially across the ply grain, I scored with a knife to help prevent breakout when initially starting. Once I had establishes an edge I could remove the straight edge and follow to the end.
Hopefully this may help.
Neil
