Trailer security - Locks

Trailer users - Please Advise.

How to secure a boat trailer against theft?
(a) when parked on its own,
(b) when on the tow-ball.
What experience, good or bad, do you have of different locks/systems?
What do you recommend or advise against?

I use one of this type when the boat is at home, or left in a dinghy park. It's enough to deter the passing crim. But if someone's serious, then not very much will stop them, so make sure you are insured :)

That looks like the twin of the one on ours. From Screwfix.
If that style has served you for a good many years, (and your boats are visible form the road IIRC, for any would-be-felon to see), I should relax.

Graham N said some useful things on HBBR forum, and finished (like you) with " ... use reasonable physical deterrents, have good Insurance and stop worrying".

I have this lock from SAS which is approved by insurers, it is relatively easy to store and fit and it doesn't foul the rather close fitting of Admiral trailer mudguards when fitted with 10 inch wheels.



They are expensive mind (rrp £120) but I bought mine nearly new off Facebook Market place for £40.

Looks like Peter secured good value for money there.

A passing contributor, who has not joined the forum, suggested;
"Master 389DAT trailer lock. Since the lock mechanism is built-in there is no hasp to cut. This increases the degree of difficulty and the time involved."
